Another one has just come in. Red 2g NA auto, 114,000 kms. Big 2nd gen brakes (two piston rears, large 4 piston fronts), under bonnet heat shield is a 7/10, working heater display, original MMC stereo, seats and steering wheel condition are excellent, factory floor mats. 

Good engine & auto trans (both still available).

Hey Box a few questions - some are just to increase my knowledge.

Does the engine out a series two drop in and bolt up to a gen 1 mounts and tranny (5 speed)?

How much do the brakes go for and i hear they go right in easily ( as long as wheel clears)

And where would you recommend getting your hands on a cranshaft for a 6g72?

Yes. You have to swap the 1st gen crank pulley and cam position sensor over to the later engine.

$350. They bolt straight in, you need to cut the rear backing plate to suit the larger diameter rotors. Wheel fitment issues may arise depending on your style of rim. Also the 1st gen spare wheel won't fit over the larger front caliper, you can either buy a 2g spare wheel to suit or just fit the 1st gen spare to the rear if you ever need to use it. 

Unsure. I don't have any spares at this stage, sorry. Second hand ones do seem to come up cheap every now and again, they're getting thin on the ground though. 

Hope this helps. I do still have the big brakes and a 2nd gen non turbo engine available if you want them.

Yeah as far as I could tell the NA GTO and 30M cranks were the exactly same (2-bolt mains).

Yes they're the same apart from the dowel which is missing in the auto versions.
To me it always makes more sense to get the old one reground rather than replacing it.
Unless you want an extra.

1st gen / 2nd gen crank pullies are the same too......unless I've overlooked something.
All you need is the 1st gen CAS to put a 2nd gen engine into a 1st gen.
There's also an extra sensor on the water cross over pipe, missing on 2nd gen........unless it's the other way round but there's a difference there.

I was under the inpression i would be better of going with a forged crank as part of the rebuild? And i was always told a reground crank in a engine that has spun is always a bad idea? I am not claiming to be an expert or anything here just getting as much experince from yourselves as i can.

Its a 92 tt 6g72 that has spun a bearing and im building it back to stock but would like it be slightly more on the reliable side as possible for a car this age.

And thank you very much Box but I dont want to kill a perfectly good engine, i am sure i will be able to track one down somewhere!

If you're building it back to stock then regrinding it is probably the best way to go, unless it's really badly damaged.

Hang on, which dowel is this?  The engine I'm building has a crank from an auto

The flywheel flange has 8 holes for bolts and an extra hole for a locating dowel.
The flywheel has the same.
The crank from a manual has a dowel inserted into the hole which lines up with the hole in the flywheel.
The crank from the auto still has the hole but no dowel.
The flex plate doesn't have the hole for it (I don't think?.......need to double check)


Not that it matters, it just puts it out of balance by a smidgen, nothing to worry about.
You can always make your own dowel by cutting down an old bolt if you're really fussy.



Try googling it on 3SI but don't hold your breath..........they only use new cranks over there..........because they can't fix anything.
