Right. Crank and flywheel should be all balanced by now and awaiting invoice. The heads are done. I have all the driveline components I need except f*** I just remembered I was supposed to go to Fielding this weekend and pick up the bumper from Lyle's! Sorry man, just burn it or something.

The big holdup is that I still haven't found any replacement cams for the pitted ones in the front (soon to be rear) head. Getting them ground down will require a lot of supporting work to tune it for the extra airflow I imagine.

I'm looking for advice here. If I can't find a solution then poor old Lord Monty III might be in the firing line (those cams work juuuust fine). I'd rather not sacrifice my daily driver for it. Then I'd have to drive the Mirage :|

Box, I've been thinking about your suggestion to use your piggyback ECU and TT fuel setup. Might be the way ahead, especially if I end up with non-standard cams.

Oh yeah, and this absolutely must be running by Christmas. I'd rather not start the installation if I can't finish it by then.

Gazza I have a set of MIVEC cams here if you really need? I suspect they'll be quite worn though judging by the state of the heads they came out of. I've been meaning to pick up a copy of the Japanese engine manual for the 6G72 to get the cam height spec and limit on the MIVEC but still haven't so still in the dark.. Let me know if you need them and I can get some high res pics of the lobes

Thanks man. Getting any literature on the 30M engine is so hard because it was basically a JDM engine so it's buried in a mountain of Japanese. It's like looking for a needle in a stack of needles.

30M cams are very much for sale, since I purchased a new daily driver today. Will grab some photos and chuck a vernier over them this evening, after I calibrate my wideband

Remember the heads that these cams came out of? ^^^^^

I've taken a lot of high res photos for you, these are the worst journals and lobes from the cams:

All the journals measured 25.95-25.97mm with digital verniers. Can assume that 26mm is brand new just like the GTO. Therefore you could also assume these are gonna put you outside the clearance spec of .05-.09mm by a bit.

I measured the lobes off one intake and one exhaust cam, heights as follows:

EX lo: 34.42, 34.41, 34.41
EX hi: 36.34, 36.34, 36.35
IN lo: 34.44, 34.46, 34.45
IN hi: 35.78, 35.80, 35.80

Of course we don't know what spec is.

These sure aren't brilliant condition cams. Might be best if I send them up to you and you make a call on whether you want to run them or even if they're better than what you've got now.

I now have a set of cams, thanks to ravensierra. Which means it's time to go into town again tomorrow and get a few things:

30M head gaskets and seals.
Drop the cams off to get them cleaned up. They're not as bad as I thought they'd be, and the camshaft man said they look fine (after a cursory glance  ).
Should be able to pick up my block this week with its lightened flywheel and balanced bottom end.

I still want to get my 6-speed transfer case and rear diff cleaned up and checked by someone, maybe the engineers can do that too. I was hoping to get it to geartech in Palmerston North but I just don't have a chance to get down there. I just want to make sure they're in decent nick and get the seals replaced.

Still driving the car every chance I get, right up until this new drivetrain is ready to go in :D

Thanks guys. I've been working on the driveline stuff, managed to get the propshaft cleaned up over the last couple of nights. It took a lot of wire wheeling and cleaning, then I coated it in rust converter and a few coats of enamel to make it at least look like it's not going to fall apart.

Image

I've got new head gaskets, they look exactly like the OEM ones which is a good sign I suppose. Got some valve stem seals too. But the list keeps growing so tomorrow I'll try to get back down to BNT to order a few more things like propshaft hanger bearings. Old ones were munted, I had to destroy one just to get it off the wreck.

I really want to get the 6-speed transfer case and rear diff checked over and the shaft seals replaced. Anyone know where I can order the seals from?

I'm also wondering about replacing the oil pump since the bottom end has been worked on. Or is that overkill?

Another question, does anyone know the specifications of the 30M fuel pump? As it stands I'm running a GTO NA one and I don't want it to run lean (or too rich). I'll be using the stock 30M ECU.

More baby steps today:
I cleaned up the 6-speed shifter assembly. I swear to god EVERYTHING that came off that TT was rusty!
Image
Waiting on a new boot for the "Lobro" CV joint on the propshaft, should be here Monday.

I was thinking I should run some fresh brake fluid through the system for track day in a few weeks, so then I figured I might as well get this from the wreckers first. I'll mount it tomorrow and get the Mrs. to help with the brake bleeding.
Image

Oh yeah, and can someone please confirm that this is normal?!

That transfer case spline looks OK. Got a pic of the gearbox side? Or is that the output shaft you sold me? Because that was fine.

Yeah it was that shaft. I figured it was OK, I just hadn't looked at it for ages and it surprised me to see that the splines didn't come all the way to the edge.

I've had a battle the last few days to get the brakes right and to get the bloodly propshaft back together. I made the rookie mistake of not putting mating marks on the components and I ended up with a hell of a job trying to figure out how that Lobro joint went back together. Youtube helped in the end. I got a new boot for that lobro joint, and you do not want to know how much it cost

Image

As for the brakes, ever since I installed the Pajero master cylinder it just doesn't feel quite right. It's gripping enough to easily lock the brakes but the pedal feels soft and it doesn't feel like the fronts are braking evenly. I bled it till I was blue in the face (and pocket) and there doesn't seem to be any air in it. I'll take it to the garage and get the brakes tested on individual wheels.

Do you still have ABS?

Bleed the brakes with the engine running.....it says so in the manual somewhere.

Yes, yes, yes, that might be so, but you're clearly missing the bigger picture.....

Never had ABS. And yeah I tried that too, bled them in sequence with the engine running. I'm pretty sick of jacking this thing up and removing all four wheels. It might have something to do with the Pajero master cylinder, maybe I should have just changed the reservoirs over instead of changing the whole cylinder. Might also be a pedal adjustment?

That was going to be my next comment..............I just changed the reservoir on mine, no bleeding to do.
Why don't you put the original master cylinder back on, at least you know it's a good one?
Then swap the reservoir.

Yeah, just swapping the reservoir over is the way to do it, don't even have to bleed it afterwards.

**box signal**

How do I get that power steering pump off the rear diff? It seems to only have one bolt (hopefully it's not bolted from the inside) and removing the cap from the top of it was a hilarious version of Pandora's Box. So many tiny components!

The brakes are fine, I got them tested today. I was just being a bit paranoid about stacking it into a wall.

One bolt and it should just pull/twist out. Pretty sure it's sealed with an o-ring so might be a bit tight, or the flange might have rusted to the diff housing.

Nah mine is a Z15A, so I'll pull that pump off and get a blanking plate made.

Haha thanks, to get that photo we drove down the boat ramp at Waimarama and drove along the beach. I'm amazed I didn't bottom out on the way down, that ramp is covered in boulders. The only other vehicles on that beach were tractors, so we got some funny looks!
